The Decision to Divorce: A Study

Slater & Gordon is a British law firm that recently conducted a study based on the reasons for divorce. They discovered that making the decision to split is not an easy one. In fact, the average divorcee considers divorce for 24 months and 12 days before actually doing ahead with it. These couples spend 18 months of that time trying to work at their marriage and fix it.

The survey shows that about 36% of all clients consider their divorce to be a personal failure, so they keep working at it for the 18 month window prior to calling it quits. 47% of all individual ssay that they tried to work at their marriage for the sake of their children, and 76% of all couples say that they tried to fix problems in their marriage prior to deciding on divorce.

The survey also shows that 56% of couples discussed the idea of their divorce with someone other than their partner beforehand. Many spouses talked with a friend, a parent, a lawyer, or a sibling before they launched in. This may be because these confused individuals wanted advice, and approval or disapproval regarding the choice to end a marriage.

Only about 36% of divorcees choose to speak with a lawyer prior to divorce. This means that 2/3 of all divorcees don't have a professional opinion when they file.
